Mubaloo take the top honours at Business Awards

THE winners of the Post's sixth annual Business Awards have been announced.

And the big winner at last night's black tie gala event was the high-tech firm Mubaloo, which picked up two awards – including the prestigious Business of the Year Award.

The distinctive Bristol blue crystal awards were handed out in ten categories and Mubaloo, which specialises in creating applications for smartphones, was chosen as the winner of the Business of the Year Award.

Mark Mason, chief executive and founder of the company, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have won these awards.

"It is great that all the hard work and effort that we have put in over the last three years has been recognised in this way.

"We are proud of what we have achieved and we are proud that we are based in this great city. We have got plans to grow nationally and internationally but Bristol is where our heart is and Bristol is where we will stay."

Scores of companies entered the awards and the shortlist ranged from family-run firms to multi-national organisations with thousands of employees.

Visionary builder, developer and environmental campaigner John Pontin was also honoured with the prestigious lifetime achievement award.

Mr Pontin said he was humbled by the award – but added that his achievements have come as part of working with great colleagues over the years.

The ceremony was held at Ashton Gate, the home of Bristol City, and was attended by around 300 guests, business leaders and award winners.

Alan Renwick, publisher of Bristol News and Media, which owns the Post and its sister paper the Western Daily Press, was part of the judging panel who chose the winners.

He said: "This is the sixth year the Post has held these awards but it is the first time I have been personally involved. Even though I am still relatively new to this city I was fully aware of the high regard in which these awards are held by the business community.

"When I saw the quality and the depth of the entries we received from firms operating in the Bristol area, it made me realise just why these awards are held in such high regard. Over the last six years, these awards have become one of the key events in this city's business calendar.

"Even in these difficult and testing times we had masses of firms wanting to take part in our awards. They ranged from companies run by just one or two people to multi-national firms employing thousands.

"As a result, choosing the winners in each category was very difficult.

"For any company to succeed these days it needs not only to know its market but to have a very good business model.

"But of course it also needs bright and committed people, from those at the top with ideas and drive, to those who help keep the business ticking over from day to day.

"Our awards are a celebration of all of them and what they bring to this great city that we live and work in.

"The people who were shortlisted and the winners are also the people who are driving the local economy forward.

"In these tough times it is fantastic to see all these businesses continuing to do what they do best.

"The business community is the heartbeat of this great city and it is only right that their efforts are recognised with these great awards."
