Laguna Seca Invitational Downhill Skateboard Race

Apparently there is more to the Sea Otter Classic than riding a bike. NHS and Road Rider hosted the The Laguna Seca Invitational Downhill event at the famed raceway, honoring the 1981 downhill race when Roger Hickey and John Hutson battled down the track.

Highlights from Thrasher Magazine

Watching the competition made me think back to 10 years ago when the Gravity Games had skateboarders racing at up to 70-mph, an event that resulted in some of the heaviest..

Anheuser-Busch unhappy with remarks made by UFC fighters

The UFC's marquee sponsor is not happy with the actions of some their athletes, and they spoke up about it in Advertising Age. Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of the Bud Light brands that are featured prominently in the Octagon, talked about their displeasure.

"We've communicated to the UFC our displeasure with certain remarks made by some of its fighters, and they have promised to address this. If the incidents continue, we will act," the brewer said in a statement. A-B, which did not elaborate on potential actions, also stated that it "embraces diversity and does not condone insensitive and derogatory comments rooted in ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, etc."

The UFC responded to Ad Age:

"Unlike most other sports leagues, we encourage our athletes to engage online. It is part of our company culture, and whenever you are at the forefront of a trend or initiative, it comes with its own pitfalls. We will continue to embrace social media while looking for better ways to stay in front of the issues. This includes a mandate for our athletes to attend sensitivity training and a seminar on proper use of social media."

The problem is not that the UFC has athletes who say and do stupid things. Every organization -- from a small family-run business to the largest multi-national conglomerates -- has people who do and say stupid things. The problem is with how the UFC has (or hasn't) dealt with the issues.

There is little consistency with how the UFC has dealt with the dumb things said by their athletes. Some, like Miguel Torres, were cut. Some, like Rashad Evans, were rebuked privately. Some, like Quinton Jackson, were ignored.

A comprehensive code of conduct for athletes, including clear examples of crossing the line and fair punishments for such actions, would not just be the fair thing for UFC fighters, but would also prevent them from getting a public rebuke from their biggest sponsor. It's just good business.

Video: Japanese TV show pits MX-5 against BRZ and FR-S at Twin Ring Motegi

Japanese sports cars at Twin Ring Motegi

A Japanese motoring show, complete with titles in comic fonts, put three racing pilots behind the wheels of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S (Toyota 86, in this case) for three laps of the 2.1-mile East Road Course at Twin Ring Motegi. Of course the segment producers know that putting the 167-horsepower roadster against the 200-hp coupes isn't exactly fair, so they gave the Mazda a small head start of about three grid positions.

Ex-sports car racer Takayuki Kinoshita handles the Mazda, former open-wheel pilot Naoki Hattori drives the BRZ, and former Le Mans-class winner Keiichi Tsuchiya gets fast and loose in the FR-S. The drivers offer copious on-track commentary, but it's in Japanese. That said, watching the MX-5 try to stay in front and watching Tsuchiya start drifting are universal gearhead languages. You'll find the action after the jump.

Nintendo aims to flog 18 million 3DS, up to 10.5 million home consoles this fiscal year

Image

All eyes are on Nintendo, now that it has revealed losses of $460 million. Buried in all of the financial paperwork were the revelations that it sells the 3DS at a loss, its plans for digital distribution and its projected sales figures for this year. It aims to flog 18.5 million 3DS handhelds and 10.5 million Wii consoles by March 31st 2013. But wait, what about the Wii U? That figure actually encompasses both old and new hardware, so it is either hoping for a sharp fall in Wii sales or a tough opening for the new baby. It's a bold pair of figures that relies upon how well New Super Mario Bros 2, Animal Crossing and the new hardware capture the public's imagination in a time when people are tightening their belts (especially if they've been using Wii Fit).
