ALMOST 50 drivers have been arrested for drink- or drug-driving during Avon and Somerset police's Operation Tonic.
Since it started on December 1, a total of 47 motorists who have been stopped by officers have tested positive.
Chief Inspector John Holt, of the Operations and Roads Policing Unit, said: "This is an excellent result so far and sends a clear message to people that our officers are out there and are determined to catch offenders."
An example of that was in Clifton on Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Traffic police carried out static checks – stopping passing vehicles and talking to the drivers – on Whiteladies Road and the Triangle.
They issued eight fixed penalty notices for traffic offences and took eight breath tests, which were negative.
This Christmas police are asking people to shop a drink- or drug- driver by ringing 999 or texting the word 'drunk' to a special number, 81819, from their mobile and giving the driver's details if they see anyone getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
Officers will be handing out "don't drink or drug-drive leaflets" and advice at a road safety and crime prevention display at Clarks Village in Street, Somerset, tomorrow afternoon and evening.
A wrecked car crashed by a drink-driver will be on show to illustrate the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Chief Insp Holt added: "We want people to have a safe and crime-free Christmas and New Year. Anyone who intends to drive should remember there is no safe limit for drinking – except not drinking at all."
